Homeowners Insurance Information

Home Insurance for Florida

Protecting your home should be a priority, and one of the best ways to do so is by securing a homeowners insurance policy. What’s more, if you financed your home, your lender may require you to have homeowners insurance. Despite its importance or obligation to have this type of policy, many people don’t know what exactly homeowners insurance includes or why it’s essential. In some cases, this can result in homeowners not carrying enough insurance and not finding out until it’s too late.

The team of agents at Five County Insurance is here to help you understand your Florida home’s insurance needs. We can walk you through your insurance options and guide you to find a policy that fits your needs and budget. For more information or to get started, give us a call at 239-939-1400.

What Does Home Insurance Cover?

The standard homeowners insurance policy provides a level of protection for your home itself, the things you keep in your home, and your liability for injuries or damage that occur on your property or you or your covered family members may cause to others.

Property Coverage

The property protection component of your home insurance plan will typically provide coverage for the dwelling (structure of your home), other structures (detached structures of your home, including a garage, shed, patio, pool or fence) and personal property (the contents and personal items in your home, including furniture and clothing). A standard policy may also provide protection for loss of use, which is when a covered loss causes you to leave your home, resulting in additional expenses over and above your normal living expenses. All property coverage is subject to a deductible and policy limit.

Liability Coverage

The liability component of a standard home insurance plan will generally protect against lawsuits that arise for property damage or bodily injury that you or a covered family member caused to another person. It typically covers the cost of litigation and settlements or court awards and applies whether you’re home or away. Medical payments coverage, which is often a component of liability coverage, can provide coverage for an injured party that sustained an injury at your home.

Additional Coverage

Every home insurance policy is different, and you may be able to obtain additional coverage for your valuables, as well as coverage for threats like hurricanes or windstorms, as well as flooding. Be sure to discuss your unique insurance needs with an agent to make sure you’re properly protected.

Are All Kinds of Home Insurance Alike?

Your home is unique, from its shape and size to the materials used to build it. In addition, your possessions have wide-ranging values. Any loss is costly, so you’ll want to maximize your benefits.

Ensure you have enough structure protection to rebuild the home. Keep in mind; the construction value differs from the cost to buy a new home.

Ask your insurance agent to adjust your possessions coverage to match the total value of your belongings as closely as possible. That way, you’ll have fewer limitations when making a claim. Keep in mind; some policies will limit how much they pay per item.

Your policy likely includes a deductible on the damage. It’s a good idea to take as high a deductible as you can manage—this may lower your premium cost.
